Tube in Jacob's ear
Jacob went to the Ear, Nose, Throat (ENT) doctor again today.
He has been sick for 5 weeks. Congestion, cough and ear ache have been his primary symptoms.
We started at the Urgent Care Center: Diagnosis - viral. They sent us on our way with some prescription decongestant.
Two weeks later, we went to his regular doctor: Diagnosis - sinus infection. They sent us on our way with a Z-Pack. The day he finished his z-pak, he woke up crying with an ear ache.
2 Days later, we went to Dr. Ward, the ENT: Diagnosis ear infection, sinus infection, bronchitis. They sent us on our way with a new antibiotic.
We were supposed to return in 3 weeks - 12/4 for a follow up appointment. He never stopped coughing, but his ear stopped hurting.
Monday after thanksgiving I called and moved his appointment from 12/4 to 11/29. I'm glad I did.
The doctor said he's just full of fluid. Dr. Ward had Jacob hold his nose and blow hard. Most people ear drums will pop, not Jacob's. He said he's got to get the fluid out of that ear. He's going to put a tube in the left ear on 12/14 at Covenant Medical Center (not the Lakeside hospital, but the main hospital). Dr. Ward operates on Thursdays at CMC and Lakeside on Fridays. Jacob has had tubes before, when he was 20 months old, for the same reason - Fluid.
While Jacob is under anesthesia, they will do a under the skin allergy test. Jacob has had the skin prick tests, but only showed sensitivity to Mesquite. The injections under the skin will give us a much better picture to the things that trigger allergic reaction - mainly fluid.
As part of the pre-op they will do a chest X-ray to make sure nothing else is going on in his lungs. Dr. Ward said that if his nose and ears were full, he said his chest is probably full too. If we can identify the source of the allergy, we are hopeful that the fluid will be decreased - dramatically!!
